Carbon ROM for Galaxy S3! [Android 4.4.4]

For this week’s Galaxy S3 ROM of the Week, check out latest version of Carbon ROM!

Based on latest Android 4.4.4, Carbon ROM brings you nice tweaked performance on top of latest Android 4.4.4 along with slew of customization so you can get your S3 running “just right”.

I know many of you were having trouble getting front camera working with LiquidSmooth ROM last week but it was really a nasty bug that still hasn’t been fixed.  I don’t personally use front camera much but I know it’s definitely going affect your selfies.

With Carbon ROM, everything is working out of the box and should get your S3 supercharged with latest Android 4.4.4 and nice set of customization options.  Some of my favorite features include Lockscreen notifications, Battery Saver Mode, Screen Recording, HOVER notifications, and some more.

Max, I love the site and I love that you still keep an eye out for a phone that is getting progressively older. Please do not stop! Thanks for all that you do!

    • Max says:

Yes will keep doing, Android 4.4.4 is wonderful btw, Apple went backwards with their updates as older iphones that received new OTA updates got slower, with Android like S3, it’s the opposite, can’t believe how much faster my older phones are, amazing!

    Hi everyone.
I wanted to share what I’ve learned.
Seems like most of the Android 4.4.4 ROMs (plus 4.4.2, 4.4.3) have the same issue with the Google Camera shutting the phone down. On Google Play the comments were full of the same problem about the camera regardless of the phone or if it was rooted.
I got around it and was able to use Liquid Smooth again.
I installed clean copy of the ROM and used the micro Gapps from highonandroid. This installed minimal apps and NOT the Google camera. The stock camera works awesome and I got full functionality from Liquid Smooth.

    Comments about Carbon ROM:
It is slower than Liquid Smooth and doesn’t have nearly the customization options. It also has the same issue with the camera as Liquid Smooth.
Other than that it’s pretty good but I personally liked Liquid Smooth better and I’m using it now. (Until something better comes out ;))

Has any one had issues with pictures via gmail and the loss of contacts? In both Carbon and liquidsmooth this has happened. But when I go back to Resurrection everything is back and working just fine. I love the speeds of both but I hate to have to go back to a rom that works….If it isn’t the roms could it be gapps…..any suggestions?

Hello. so far the rom is ok jsut a few random bootloops. but one issue im having is my wifi doesnt seem tobe connecting. It says it is on but its is not being used and there is no wifi icon. is this a bug that has to be fixed? because i do not want to be using data all the time, especially when im home. any info would be appreciated thanx.

    • Max says:

Could be an issue for i9300 version? My wifi works fine here for the Qualcomm version.

      • SEB says:

i have the 1535 version. never had any issues before with roms period. its just not connecting to wifi at all and no icon. i reinstalled my backup and will try a full wipe and reinstallation. i dont know if it will help.

        • Max says:

Hmmm that’s weird, you can try a fresh reinstall, if that doesn’t work, just move on to another rom for now. With CDMA phones like Sprint/Verizon, sometimes AOSP ROMs just don’t work. Which is only for network but since you are not getting wifi, I don’t know what else to try.

          • SEB says:

            Thanks. ill try it

          • SEB says:

after reinstalling and even installing liquid smooth. connecting to wifi just tells me “saved and secured” will not connect. I find that strange. i guess ill have to wait for other roms.

            • Max says:

Oh that’s not a broken wifi, just try resetting the wifi settings, it should work eventually. Set up your wifi password, then try turning off wifi then on. I thought your wifi didn’t work at all but that’s normal if it will not connect at first. it happens sometimes but will go away after first successful connection.

  12. sorin saftoiu says:

It is an excelent rom. I found the settings for wallpapers. No problems so far. Good battery, all the functions work, including gps, camera, wifi etc. A step ahead from Carbon 4.3. My Galaxy S3 I9300 is satisfied.

Do you think this rom will make an IMEI problems .
cus another roms make this shi**

    • Max says:

IMEI problems happen 1 out of 100 flashes, usually not from the custom ROM, it “just happens” sometimes. But you can easily restore IMEI by restoring any of your back up ROM. So, make sure you have at least 1 backup ROM at all times!!!

I have installed the rom on my AT&T version of galaxy s3. It runs really nice but I found issues with video calling apps like Skype and Vonage. Both this apps crash when tried to do a video call. i hope this will help someone… good luck

  38. Louis says:

After the initial flash of this ROM and the recommended reboot, my TMOS3 will not proceed past the Carbon loading icon. I cant even get back to Recovery Mode to reset the phone and reflash everything. Volume Up + Home + PWR does nothing and makes me think I have lost all root functionality.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

  39. Steve says:

    Dear Max,
I tried lot of your Roms. It’s good. But they have a problem at volume control. Every time after I use the voice app like Viber, the system and media volume were adjusted to very low, but when I check the volume bar, it show me all volume are set on highest, I have to turn on the voice app like Viber again and replay the voice message I got couple times, then system and media volume will go to normal. I am using Carbon Rom now, I tried Spirit Rom and Liquid Rom, all have this problem. I also tried the CM11 Volume Booster, it doesn’t help. I don’t know how to do. Can you help?

  40. Makarand says:

Hey Max, I flashed the Spirit Rom which was on the site earlier on. What is happening now is that my phone starts up but the “Spirit Rom Loading” screen keeps running. It briefly shows the lock screen for a second and starts looping the “Spirit Rom Loading” splash screen again. The messed up part is I cannot get into the recovery by pressing Home+Volume Up+Power. I am not sure how to fix this. Your response will be appreciated.

    • Makarand says:

Edit, Was able to get to the recovery. The trick is to let go off the Home+Volume Up+Power buttons as soon as you see the Samsung logo.

  41. Doug says:

This ROM is great…my only issue so far is that the phone volume is entirely too loud on my SPH-L710. I have it at the lowest setting and still have to pull phone away from my ear to talk. Anyone see this issue or have a solution that I could try. Thanks in advance!!

  42. Doug says:

I have narrowed down the issue and it’s not that the volume is too loud but speakerphone is automatically enabled during incoming and outgoing calls. The actually speakerphone “button” is not enabled during calls ..but pressing it disables speakerphone and the call is returned to the normal setting.

I’ve reinstalled several of the nightlies for this ROM…but the problem still persists. Any ideas/suggestions??

  43. Ragnar Hentze says:

I love you job, easy and good..:)
When I try to install a ROM it says Status 7 and Status 0. And when I looked for my backup, it is gone.
HELP, I need my phone to work..:) Now I only have the root.

  44. Andrew says:

I love Carbon Roms but this one does seem to have an issue. My issue is that wifi signal seems a little weaker than stock. I’m sitting pretty much on top of my router and I am still 1 bar short of full. Normally I can get 2-3 bars across my whole house but now if I go to the other side of my house from the router I get 1-0 bars. Not sure if I’ll keep this Rom unless there’s a way to fix it.

    • Andrew says:

I’ve also noticed that the battery does seem to drain rather quickly compared to my older roms. I took my phone off the charger at %100 and wasn’t in the car more than 10-15mins ans it was already down to 92%. Not sure why it would drop so fast

  45. John says:

Will Carbon rom work on my Verizon SCH-i535 phone?

  46. laith says:

i have a problem with the network when i install modem on the stock firmware i works but when i install it after i flash the rom it won’t reboot.

  47. Steve Goodman says:

I have found that after flashing The Liquidsmooth Rom I got from you and any Carbon Rom after 8-28-14. That my phone can no longer find my Sim card. It will on Carbon 8-28-14 and earlier. Is there a fix for this?

  48. Hurbysos says:

I attempted to install this rom on my Metro PCS Galaxy S3 (SCH-R530M) and it worked for one small detail. My S3 was first generation for Metro PCS, which still utilized CDMA SIM (orange card), rather than the more modern GSM SIM (white card). After installing this ROM, my CDMA card was toast and I lost all connectivity with my carrier CDMA network. Since no one makes a replacement CDMA SIM card, and used ones are usually stolen and blacklisted, I was stuck. So no calls, texts, or MMS. Luckily LTE data still worked. I was able to get a replacement through insurance.

    • Max says:

ROMs cannot make your SIM card go toast, you just had to restore stock firmware with ODIN, next time try that and your SIM will work fine again. Also don’t forget to set APN to get data.

      • Hurbysos says:

Thanks for the heads up, Max. According to Metro support lady, the CDMA card could’ve been toast long before doing the ROM change (although she didn’t know that’s what I had done). So it may have been completely unrelated. On my S3 device, I do not have an APN settings menu in either the 4.4.4 rom or the stock rom. I had a CDMA Subscription menu instead. Data worked fine, it was CDMA network for calls, SMS, and MMS that did not. I’m just now learning the world of custom ROMs. Since the Carbon 4.4.4 Rom came with a firmware update, would using the stock ROM to return to stock not include the necessary firmware as well?

For some reason on my T-Mobile S3 , my media volume won’t go up . I tried going through the settings but its like set to mute or something so I can’t listen to anything , HELP!

  53. Alejandro says:

Hi, I´m sorry for bothering (I already wrote you on Hangouts with the respective screenshots) but since you have being my guide by 3 years on rooting and Customs ROMS I really need your help. Well, I flashed some of the custom roms you published on and they work great but, I’m planning on sell my S3 SGH – i747 (AT&T) I just flashed back the S3 rooted stock rom from your site (I didn’t backed up the rom within my cellphone, I bought it used and was rooted when I got it)
And I have the next issue: 1. Flashing the rooted stock ROM from your site create a issue with the internal SD CARD, i can access it through the stock file explorer, but when I install an app from Play Store like CamScanner (a portable scanner) or A Better Camera, the give me the next messagges:
Failed to check the directory. Please check the status of the SD CARD
Tha last one says: The image don´t exists or was possibly erased
The screenshots were taken without a microsd card installed
    2. I though the problem was the ROM so I decided flash via Odin the Stock ROM without root you provided on your website (the 4.4.2 version) but I got the next message:
    NAND Write Start!!
    FAIL (Auth)

    Complete (Write) operation failed.
All threads completed. (succeed 0/failed 1)
With the first square in RED with the message: FAIL!
I tried using Triangle Away since at the time I got this error on my computer (I´m running Windows 8.1 64 bits and opened Odin v3.09 as administrator)
In the cellphone on Download mode appears:
    PRODUCT NAME: SGH – i747
    CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
    Warranty Bit: 1
SW REV CHECK FAIL: Fused 3 > Binary 0 (after using Triangle Away)
Hope you can help me =(
And sorry for taking your time
P.D.: When I use the stock camera app it works flawlesly and, when I flash back custom roms like Carbon or Cyanogenmod 11 the issue dissapears.
