Samsung’s official 4.2.1 “leaked” ROM is out in the wild and you can grab a copy of the leaked firmware and flash with ODIN and also there’s a rooted version with custom recovery for those of you already rooted on the Galaxy S3 GT-i9300.

What’s new with Android 4.2.1 TouchWiz?

Well, you can expect some of the newer Android 4.2.1 features on it like lockscreen widgets and quick toggles (swipe from top to bottom with 2 fingers for quick access). If you’ve tried some of the latest Android 4.2.1/4.2.2 AOSP ROMs, you know what to expect. Photosphere is still missing in action though but don’t fret too much as this isn’t a final version just a “leak”.

If you can’t wait for the official 4.2.1 to be released or just want to take a peek at what Sammy’s been working on, flash the rooted version or even the completely stock tar.md5 via ODIN and let me know if you find any other new features.

Hey Max, do I need to Factory Wipe for this via Odin?

    • Franksr says:

What is the proper procedure for installing the 4.2.2 or 4.2.1 firmware into my unrooted Galaxy S3? Does it matter which carrier you are using when you do this?

      Thanks

    • Franksr says:

Doesn’t this upgrade have to be for a certain carrier? Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint.

  2. Manoj Guruge says:

        • Josh says:

I’m also having an issue with the native SMS app force crashing before it’s even loaded after using ODIN to install the non-rooted version.

          Any suggestions?

          Thanks

      • Josh says:

        Mark,

I came across the same issue.

I noticed when I installed the ROM using ODIN, it loaded straight onto the Home screen without going through the usual setup wizard.

I thought nothing of this at the time.

When I did a factory reset, the next time the phone booted, I was taken to the Setup Wizard. Admittedly this seemed to default to Hebrew, but it’s relatively easy to change the default language and keyboard layout.

This seems to have fixed the issue I was having with the SMS app. It now works.
