Here’s how to root your U.S./Canadian Galaxy S3 on Mac OSX!

Works on SGH-T999, SCH-I535, SPH-L710, SGH-I747, and other SGH-i747 Canadian variants like i747m. Should work on all Galaxy S3 with Qualcomm dual-core processor!

Also, I’ve included scripts for Linux and Windows, for those of you brave and curious!

This root Method works for:

Download GalaxyS3RootUSCanadaScript.zip

Step 1. Run the RootMac.sh script by typing “sh RootMac.sh”.

Step 2. Once the script runs, your phone should boot twice. The second re-boot might take a little while.

Step 3. Once done re-booting twice, download and install either “SuperSU” or “SuperUser” app from Play Store.

To verify you have full root, download and run “Titanium Backup” app from Play Store.

For Verizon Galaxy S3, I highly recommend you to download and run “EZ Unlock” app from Play Store to unlock your bootloader before installing any custom ROMs!!!

Thanks Max. I was waiting since I bought my Verizon version. I’ll give it a try right know. But before I have a question. I’m outside US right know. Do I need any to connect to my carrier during the process? and, is there any way to unlock my phone to be used with a sim from where I’m?

    • Max says:

No internet connection needed. There is a way to use for SIM, I am making a vid soon but you can check this out:
      http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1809314

      • jordan says:

hey, i used your video and followed it step by step and now I’m beyond screwed. thank you. i have spent the last 7 hours looking for a way to actually unroot using macosx when U CAN NOT GET YOUR PHONE OUT OF DOWNLOAD MODE. and it is telling me that i have software on my phone that verizon doesn’t allow and I’m only allowed to go into download mode. which i have tried 6 different odin downloads and tried everything i can to run windows on mac. without spending 100 dollars. i have the verizon ssh 1535. and i could really use some help. since no one has any idea what to do with mac

    • jasmine says:

i did all the steps but it says ADB server didn’t Ack *failed to start daemon* dosent boot or anything

  2. Russ Johnson says:

THANK YOU for this!! I have been trying to root my ATT GS3 for months on my mac but with heimdall not supporting the GS3 it just wasting happening. Even setup a windows VM on my mac to try it but the VM would crash everytime I tried to install the Samsung drivers. This is was super quick/simple and worked like a charm. Mine didnt reboot twice though like the instructions say but after the first boot, I was able to install SuperSu and all my root apps again.

    Thanks again!!

  3. Scott says:

I have tried this several times and all I can get is Permission denied
on all lines. I have tried running chmod 755 and sudo. I have a
macbook osx 10.7.5 and my Galaxy S3 is brand new from T-Mobile
yesterday, this is the first time I have connected it to my computer. I have rebooted my Mac and S3 with no luck.
I also installed Kies hoping that that would help some how. What am I
    doing wrong?

    • Max says:

try “chmod 755 *” before running script then.

      • skylar says:

hi, i have the same problem I too have tried running “chmod 755 *” and sudo. this is the msg i get:failed to copy ‘debugfs’ to ‘/data/local//debugfs’: Permission denied

  4. Connor says:

After sh rootmac.sh I get the whole One-Click Root Script blah blah blah, and then at the bottom it says,
*daemon not running. starting it now *
    *daemon started successfully *

From there it just sits. What now?

    • Connor says:

So…any help? It would be appreciated…

    • Juenlis Coss says:

I had the same problem and solved.

You must change your USB PC connection as “Camera (PTP)” and go to Settings > Developer option, and select “USB debugging”. Next you will can root your phone with this script without problem.

      • Ayron says:

I tried that setting on mine (with the same problem) and that did not fix the problem for me unfortunately.

        • D says:

Same problem here. Tried multiple times, setting usb debugging on and off, setting camera ptp on and off, tried different usb ports, same thing everytime, hangs.

    • James says:

Mine does the same, it just says daemon not running. starting now and the daemon started successfully!!!! I have the i747m running 4.1.1 and i’m with bell!

    • T says:

Under developer options there is a setting “Verify apps via USB”, uncheck that and it should pop up the RSA key validation to your computer (click OK), and then should start to work. Might have to unplug/replug the USB after changing that and maybe restart the root script.

  5. Anthony says:

Worked perfectly for me. Had to rename the folder however because it wont open it in terminal if the extension is still part of the name

  6. Chris says:

Max, thank you very much for the video!! If i need to unroot, how would i do that? Also, can i except updates if i am rooted?

  7. Alex says:

Everything worked as explained in the vid, great job!

  8. Bowser says:

Worked like a champ! Mine only rebooted one which is a bit odd but SuperSU reported root afterwards with no problems. Restoring my apps using TitaniumBackup now! Thanks!

  9. Megan says:

Max could you post a video on how to “How to UNROOT U.S./Canadian Dual-Core Galaxy S3 on Mac OSX!” on your Verizon GS3. As Chris stated earlier, I also checked the FAQ and could not find this info. It would be nice to have a fallback procedure. Thanks.

  10. ms says:

Worked perfectly on 10.8 against Sprint device. Grabbed goomanager and installed twirp, and now I’m on my way to a new rom! Thank you!

  11. Jon says:

Everything went successfully but when I try to install Cyanogenmod it gives me a status 7 error. Help?

    • Jon says:

nvm I updated CWM and it all went fine. Had to use Terminal within the phone. Downloaded the latest CWM recovery renamed it and used this command.

      sh
      dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18

  12. Andrew says:

So I do step by step as per your video but the process keeps on looping and cannot get passed the following..

I cant get pass the terminal part. I get a “No such file or directory” message.

  14. giganticflying says:

    Thanks for the guide!

The root seemed to go well, I can install superuser and Titanium Backup, but I cannot get to clockwork recovery to make a backup of my ROM like it says in the FAQ. When I press the volume up/middle home/power buttons at the same time for 10 seconds, the phone just restarts.

Am I just mistaken that I should have clockwork recovery installed? Thanks for your help.

  15. Roger says:

I got all the root fine, but when I tried to go into CM recovery from rom manager my phone will not come back on at all.

I have the same issue, after Kies updated my phone to official JB 4.1.1 for T-Mobile GS3. I also tried the Heimdall (v 1.3.1) method with no luck, but I think this method if for International GS3.

I believe developers need to update the RootMac script to account for the changes in the official JB 4.1.1 update.

I also hate not having a rooted phone.

Thanks in advance for any advice and support, aside from ODIN, via Windows, which I will likely do, unless a Mac fix is coming soon.

As always – I appreciate all the info on this website – great work!

It seems like a lot of us now are having trouble with this Root form for Mac after the jellybean 4.1.1 was released. I purchased this phone and rooted it the first day back in October using this root process. I manually did my OTA from ICS to JB wiht my phone and I am still rotted with everything fine. My parents recently both got GSIII’s as well and now I am trying to give them the wifi hotspot. Unfortunately though, I am having the same issues with denied permissions as many of you are. If anyone does find another way for Mac, please let me know as soon as you find out. It would be really appreciated.

    Hey guys,
Look this is happening to all of us. No one can seem to get this method to work anymore and it has not been working since around the end of last year. Back when I bought my GS3 in October this worked perfectly and I had rerooted multiple times using this same method. Pretty simple, one of the easiest methods I have seen in fact. Unfortunately though, with some of the more recent OTA updates, such as JB, the method above has stopped working. I have now tried it on multiple Macs with multiple phones and nothing good is coming from it. Hopefully something will get figured out soon and someone will post a link to the solution on here. Until then, good luck everyone and enjoy your unrooted phone:(

My refurbished AT&T GS3 from AT&T (SGH-I747) arrived via UPS this afternoon. This script did get the job done on my Macbook Pro running OS X 10.7. I wasn’t optimistic at first because the script appeared to have failed but SuperSU was able to grant Rom Manager root access successfully when I tried. I just booted in to Cyanogen Mod 10 for the first time on my GS3 and I am pumped!

I did have to downgrade the stock firmware from 4.1.1 to 4.0.4 before the root script would work. That was a little scary since the only copy of Windows I have is WindowsXP running in VirtualBox on my macbook pro. After two tries, I was able to successfully downgrade to the 4.0.4 firmware using Odin. Now I am off to install all of my favorite apps on my new CM10 GS3. Thanks!

    adb shell ‘sh /sdcard/debugfs -w /dev/block/mmcblk0p14 < /sdcard/debugfsinput'

will run, however, it fails with a syntax error after some gibberish characters.
