For those of you who have rooted your Galaxy S3, you no longer have to use ODIN or heimdall to flash ClockworkMod Recovery. You can download and install ROM Manager from Play Store to do this if you lose it somehow.

Even better, ROM Manager allows you to easily backup and install custom ROMs and this video tutorial shows you how to use it.

Works for all Galaxy S3 variants, just make sure you flash the correct CWM Recovery in ROM Manager as flashing the wrong one CAN BRICK YOUR DEVICE!!!

Having trouble?  Cannot find your Galaxy S3 model number in ROM Manager?  Sometimes it may happen if you install certain custom ROMs or you have a Canadian GS3, just use manual method then!

Hey, first thanks for the great job.. I used your video for rooting with heimdall on a mac(yes a android noob) now I have another question and thought that you may have some insight..

First off I have a gt-i9300 with stock rom still, I have been interested in installing cm 9, but since I live in sweden I have no idea if it contains multi language support for the keyboard(would not like too loose that function..

Secondly I would also like to install the Ninphetamine 3 overclocking kernal but have found no one on the webb that has done this via osx…

I tried to open this with heimdall but it refuses to open the kernal file, what am i doing wrong?

Any insight and help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

  2. neil says:

    Thanks this went alot smoother:)

  3. Sunny says:

Hi, I have the canadian version and it’s not detected by the ROM manager but it shows the Galaxy Note AT&T and also shows Galaxy S2 AT&T

    Not sure which to select

  4. david says:

how do you get this rom for the att version i cant find it on the site

  5. neil says:

    hej again,
I installed cyanogenmod 9 on my gt-i9300, the installation went great, but then I had the great idea to install the Ninphetamin3 kernel as well, it turns out that they are not compatible with one another, now the phone starts up and keeps looping at the cm9 boot animation. I have no back ups on the internal sd card as I did these two actions at the same time, and the phone cannot read my original stock rom.

question…..Can I put the cm9 rom and gapps on a micro sd, then plug it back into the phone and reinstall it this way?

    Hi Max,

I have the at&t galaxy s3 with Kyan rom. I been trying to use ROM Manager to flash CWM recovery and I do not see my phone model on the list. Also, when I go to google play, it is saying my phone is a galaxy nexus instead of s3. I just want to use Rom Manager to do back ups and what not, everything else works perfectly except for that, Is there anything I can do?

    • Max says:

I will post another method to install soon! Or you can install another rom like tuchmi to show up in ROM Manager for now Or you can also re-install the CWM you installed during root.

    Hi Max,
I flashed the Foxhound Rom and set up my device accordingly. Things were fine until I restored my phone with Titanium Backup. After restoring all the apps and data with Titanium, I restarted the phone. Since then, the phone is stuck at the restart showing only the ‘Samsung’ icon which pulses. Please help as it doesn’t look like the phone is starting propery since I restored the apps and data.
    Thanks
    iyn

    Great video!

I just installed ROM Manager on my AT&T GS3 and downloaded CM10 to my internal SD and then immediately after loading, it asked if I wanted to clear my data + cache and Dalvik cache in the ‘ROM Pre-installation’ message box. Do I need to clear the data + cache and Dalvik cache just to download to my phone? I didn’t want to flash CM10 quite yet so I just canceled the entire process.

    Thank you

    • Max says:

Cache and Dalvik cache are harmeless just do them every time, clear my data will erase your settings/apps but might be required on most ROM installs.

      • John says:

Thanks for the reply. So basically, I should only download a ROM IF I’m ready to flash it right away. Does that sound right? I want to be able to download a ROM first and flash it later.

    Hi Max

Rooted my S3 using your tutorial and things are good, i want to install custom roms and saw that i can use rom manager, i installed using from the play store and when i open the app, i need to install cwm recovery first, i choose my gt i9300 model, it starts to install but gets to about 95% then whole app freezes. i left it for about 3-4 minutes then forced closed the app, re-installed the app, same thing, can this be fixed or should i just use your old method?

    • Max says:

just reboot and try it again when that happens, works fine after reboot.

      • Waseem says:

        thanks max installs perfectly now.

another thing i wanted to ask was that i would like to install the foxhound ROM but i want to start from scratch by wiping app data, SD data, basically like when i got the phone but rooted and with a custom ROM with its standard apps, i like building up a OS from scratch, can i do it and how should i go about it, of course ill backup my personal things manually and also isnt Kies a good option to backup contacts etc

        Thanks

  10. Jason says:

Hey quick question. I’m still a noob to this development stuff. I was looking in CWM Recovery mode the other day and there is an option to like update SD card or something like that. What exactly is that and is it worth doing?

    • Max says:

No need to touch anything that doesn’t need to be touched, my advice. FYI, I never use that. It’s for OTA update.zip files though.

  11. Eldub says:

I am having the same problem as others.
I have the Telus version of the s3, i747m. Once I get Rom manager installed the AT&T Version of the S3 doesn’t show up in the list.

I’ve tried everything to get clockworkmod recovery installed, but I can’t seem to figure it out.
Any idea on what I need to do next to get Rom Manager to see that clockworkmod recovery is installed?

    I’m stumped :/

    • Max says:

You can install it manually for now (using the guide for rooting), once you have a custom i747 ROM, ROM manager will recognize it.

  12. Dean says:

    hey Max!

Great site bro! I’m a prior apple guy!! just switched over to GS3 VZW a week ago and loving it!!
So far, I rooted phone with Odin, unlocked bootstrap with EZ Unlocker, and then used ClockworkMod to enter recovery mode and install Slim Bean 2.4 with some other roms..
Question is: I’m all done and i’m getting a notification for an OTA 2.5 version… Is this a newer version of my O.S? what would happen to my rooted GS3 if I accepted this?? Should I accept this??

    Please advise..
    Thanks a million!

  13. Mando says:

  23. Ryan says:

Sorry for all of the questions, but if i try to go back to my old rom with the backup i made on rom manager it says “This does not seem to be a valid backup. The MD5 file is missing.” Is there a way to fix it and get back to stock, can i reroot like i said before and put everything back on with titanium backup?

  26. John says:

I am trying to install the “Highonandroidrom” on my AT&T i747. It seems to be loading fine, but gets stuck on the animation of the android burning up the apple. I installed from the room manager. I rebooted and cleared both caches. Then tried reinstalling manually. It keeps stalling at the end of the animation. Any idea what could be wrong?

  27. John says:

Replying so I can check the “notify by email” box

  28. bishooo says:
