For this week’s Galaxy S3 ROM of the week, check out CM11 (CyanogenMod 11) ROM, which is based on the latest Android 4.4 KitKat sources.

UPDATE: CM11 Android 4.4.1 is out now, please CLICK HERE to see it instead of this one!!!

CM11 is now available to AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, GT-i9300, and Canadian Galaxy S3 users.  Although it’s still in “beta” stages, the ROM itself boots and most of the major features work out of the box such as data (3G 4G LTE), wifi, bluetooth, etc…etc…

Depending on which model of S3 you have, you could have some problems with still camera freezing or Bluetooth but otherwise, these are still pretty, solid builds considering they are just out.

With Android 4.4 KitKat, you will get lots of new features including new KitKat theme/launcher, Okay Google commands from homescreen, and slew of others.

If you don’t know what Android 4.4 KitKat is all about, check out our Top 10 Features KitKat video here:

Overall, CM11 is here to give all of you custom ROMers a taste of what KitKat is bringing.  I don’t recommend these builds for daily driving (unless you are lucky enough with an S3 with everything working out of the box) but certainly you can try them easily by backing up your current ROM.

So, go ahead, it’s here, try it this wee(end) and do let me know what you think of KitKat bar!

Note: CM11 does not have root enabled by default but you can easily enable it for adb & apps in Developer options.  If you do not know how to do this, see this video.

Max its not bad. Been running it for almost twenty four hours. Run 11/10 build for d2vzw. 11/12 is messed up. Battery life is terrible, keep a charger handy.

  2. Mrhackman says:

I have due wipe data/factory reset on my AT&T Galaxy S3 AT&T SGH-i747 and it keep saying failed why is this? Also I am using Team Win Recovery Project V. please help!!

  3. nick says:

twrp upgrade to or higher or temporarily switch to cwm. Is what I was told. Hope that helps.

    • tooandrew says:

Well, I have the newer Sprint s3 and I’m forced to use a modded twrp in order to be able to mount storage. There is no modded version of the newest twrp, and there is one cwm that is modded… but not the newest. So does this mean that I’m just boned when it comes to the kit Kat?

Error on first attempt. Running a Galaxy S3 (SGH-i747M ) Downloaded the D2ATT rom and GAPPS. Did a Factory reset, wiped the Cache and Dalvik Cache. (Was running Carbon Rom) : Receiving an error: “set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed E:Error in /external_sd/cm-11-20121111-UNOFFICIAL (Status 7) Error flashing zip… Using TWRP Recovery v2.3.3.1

  5. jm says:

tried to install on my verizon gs3 but failed and got a status 7 error…

  6. Omead says:

@jm status 7 can be fixed by flashing a newer modum. Just search xda for latest modums and flash then u should be good to go for flashing 4.4

  7. nate says:

I was running the leaked 4.3 ROM for att and also had update to the mj2 modem and boot loader. This caused a status 7 error. Fix : flashed an older stock based ROM to get the mg2 modem.
Now I have noticed that I don’t have data or anything. Ask the APN setting are gone, and when I add them they don’t show. I know this has nothing to do with the modem downgrade. Does anyone have a fix for this APN issue?

  8. NanaDroid says:

Hi, Firstly thanks to Max for all the ROMS.
So I installed latest CWM Recovery, performed a wipe data/factory reset, installed CM11 ROM, installed GAPPS 4.4 (both rom and gapps downloaded from link provided), cleared dalvik cache and rebooted.
Rom Loaded and I went through the setup smoothly.
However, noticed a few things missing/not working:
    1. Wifi – radio button to enable wifi is greyed out and does not allow me to enable wifi.
    2. Camera – initially when i started the camera, phone rebooted. after the reboot, the camera seems to be working.

Please assist with the wifi issue, is there something i can do to enable it?

    • NanaDroid says:

Oops, forgot to mention I have Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 🙂

      • steve says:

how do i install a new version of CWM? Ive been just using the version I always had from this site and im getting the error people mentioned earlier. I downloaded a .img file from the rom site but that wont work with ODIN

        • Emmanuel says:

an easier way to update CWM is to download ROM MANAGER from the playstore. Once you downloaded, just open the app and tap RECOVERY SET UP> UPDATE

          • sean says:

TWRP keeps booting despite flashing CWM with ROM MANAGER. Is there a way to remove this? If there is a walkthrough, can you please post a link? – thanks

  9. chris says:

I put this ROM in my s3 gt-9300 and I don’t have enable button for WiFi but except for that everything else is perfect!!!!!!!

  10. chris says:

Works only with 6.+cwm the root

  11. Jarid says:

Verizon I535 works, however no WIFI 🙁 any fix would be greatly appreciated. Also had to use Clockwork Mod Recovery.

  12. Tharun says:

I tried installing this ROM over the weekend using the latest ClockWork and I got a status 7 error. I know the issue is related to the bootloader but does anyone have any other suggestions on how to get past the bootloader status 7 issue? BTW I’m on the AT&T Galaxy S3…

    • Mark says:

I got the same error message on my T-Mobile Galaxy S3. Followed directions and have installed several ROMs so not sure what the issue is. Searched forums and they say it’s a failsafe so you don’t install a ROM that’s not meant for your phone and brick it.

      • Tharun says:

Yeah I know but seriously though, some people said that you should flash an older or different bootloader and try and that some people have had success with doing such. Do you or anyone else have any idea if this is the right idea or what?

  13. Josh says:

I have Sprints GS3 and so far no complaints. Is there a way to show battery percentage though? Also how do I add more home screens? I skipped that in initial setup and don’t want to reflash to see how.

  14. Carlos says:

  15. markedward says:

On the Verizon GS3. Installed just fine for me, but I’m having a tough time connecting to the network. (It shows red in the notification tray tiles.) Anyone else having the same issues on Verizon?

  16. xunholyx says:

Everybody is so horny for KitKat, even if it’s glitchy. LOL! Just wait a week or two. Something solid will be out soon. But I guess everybody wants a taste of the new stuff. Kinda like crack cocaine.

  17. Robbie Doo says:

I use CWM and installed it ok but the phone goes black screen and nothing comes up.
    I have Spring GS3 L710.
    Any suggestions?

    • Robbie Doo says:

Never mind guys. I was able to install it without any issues. So far everything is running smoothly.
      Thank y’all.

      • pnj143 says:

Hey Robbie Doo, how did you solve the problem of the screen going black on your sprint SGS3? Did you have to keep restarting your phone? Im having trouble with the same thing but I cant get it to stop freezing. I have to constantly restart my phone. Any help would be appreciated.

  18. Danny says:

  20. Mr UGoodbar says:

What is your source? How can we keep ourselves in the know of updated versions so that we don’t brick our phones.

  21. Nathan says:

Where do I find the download for the 4.4 gapps?

  22. Stuart says:

Looks very nice, however no WiFi here either. Shame.

  24. Fury says:

Dis… is… DA BOMB DIGITY! Love it. Just upgraded my GS3 on T-Mobile to that new KitKat is where it’s at! I used cwm all I did was follow the instructions. Now I’m in biznizz.

  25. Lubby Runz-It says:

There are way too many complaints on here. If you are an unexperienced ROOT user, go read up extra before you do anything. It took me litterally 10 minutes to install this and have it up and running flawlessly (Surprising cause its not a Stable build).

When I first started it, it had about 3 random restarts while setting up/ installing all of my apps back.
After all of that was completed, I rebooted my phone.
Has been working flawlessly since then.
No RR,SOD, or FC’s so far.
    Everything is functioning properly.
    Thank you, Max!

Have the i9300 version. Slick ROM, very nice, I like it.

No complaints, more of an observation really…….no WIFI, button greyed out. Reinstalled ROM with & without the GApps, same result 🙁

  31. Fury says:

I was wondering how come the ROM doesn’t carry the motion lock control? No complaint, as I said this is tha BOMB DIGITY, but I just noticed I didn’t have it. Has it purposely not been incorporated into the system?

  32. Jake says:

I’m on a Bell Canada sgh-i747m and i receive the following error message –

I see the sprint version is named should i attempt to flash this?

  39. mike says:

Oh and I know it’s the wrong boot loader. I was mainly wondering if you could help tell me how to go about putting the right one on the phone and where to find the right one. Thanks again.

  40. Abraar says:

So I went on to make a pretty bad mistake.
I didn’t update my GI9300 to Gapps to 4.4 and went ahead. Managed to soft brick my phone, I tried the whole Cache then Dalvik Cache method and it failed to reboot. It doesn’t boot, it is stuck on the GS3 boot screen. I promised myself I will never do anything to my phone after midnight when I’m half drunk.

Any help will be appreciated. Cheers.

  41. Eric says:

I am running this ROM on my Sprint gs3 and I the ringtones don’t work. When I go to choose one I get a force close. Anyone else running into this problem? Please help.

  42. PackerLou says:

Flashed KitKat on TMO GS3 with a few minute issues:

    1. No screenshot option. Main+Power doesn’t seem to work.
    2. Camera continuously crashes the phone. On the verge of “freezing” the camera app and flashing PhotoShere 4.3.

Really no HUGE difference to me, but that could be a result of running Beanstalk.

  43. Mark says:

Been running this for a few days and noticed that sound through Bluetooth has crackling noises similar to the sound of an old LP. It doesn’t do this with wired headphones just the LG Tone Bluetooth headset. Is there any settings/fix for this?

  44. Mike says:

Anyone know how to take a screen shot on this ROM?

  45. Rich says:

Got Kitkat 4.4 from Jermaine151 on xda and I must say its fantastic. Few bugs but very nice. Gotta have newest CWM and fomat sytem if you dont fomat system you leave old info on it and you will have FCs from issues that may have nothing to do with your new flashed ROM. I myself have had issues by not doing this too. Wifi for me has been working flawless.

  46. Eric says:

Hey all, great looking rom, my only problem was there were no settings. I installed the rom then the gapps but there was never any system settings. Anyone else having this issue? Anyone got any fixes or insight

  59. Brian says:

Hey, I have the AT&T version of the SIII. I installed “Android 4.4 KitKat ROM with Root for Galaxy S3! [CM11]” on which you did a video on… Everything is working fine out of the box, my question is how much space does it actually take up?? When I browse to “SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 it shows 876MB free of 12.0GB!!?? When I browse around in the internal storage I can only find 1.9 GB used. When I check storage on my phone through settings it shows 4.83GB…
Is there something I am missing? I only have two back-ups on my phone of previous roms (of which I can’t find for some reason)..

  62. LarryOZZ says:

Hey Max great site enjoy it a lot . I flash many roms and when striking problems this is my first point of call. You have mentioned that most things work straight out the box such as 4gLTE….does this mean its compatible with GTI9305….I don’t see a download for this model….Some advice for fellow flashers would be making a backup of your IMEI number. Just my opinion

  63. Aakash says:

I have been told I need to update my prl which I have not done since I rooted the phone 2 years ago. Is this something I need to pursue? Is it true no custom ROM lets you update? I would love your thoughts.
