How to Unroot T-Mobile Galaxy S3 SGH-T999!

So, you want to unroot your T-Mobile Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 completely back to stock?  Well, I know a lot of you requested this so here’s how to do it easily using ODIN.

Step 1. First, I suggest you to reset the ODIN binary counter by using TriangleAway app.  At the time of this blog post, TriangleAway app does not support T-Mobile Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 but by the time you read this it might be supported so go ahead and download the TriangleAway app apk, install, and see if it works.  (You can download it here on XDA, you will have to register for a username, it’s free.)

Step 2. Next, we are going to use ODIN to flash an official stock ROM for SGH-T999.  This process won’t increase your binary counter so if you’ve used TriangleAway app to reset the counter, you should be all good to go.  Also you can use Mobile ODIN too if you don’t have a Windows computer (but again, Mobile ODIN is not supported at the time of this writing but probably will be by the time you read this).

Hold down Volume Down, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 10 seconds until your SGH-T999 resets.

Step 3. When your phone resets (screen will go blank), let go of the Power button but keep holding down Volume Down and Center Home buttons.

Step 4. Once you see warning screen, hit Volume Up key to enter ODIN Download mode.

Step 5. Connect a microUSB cable from your SGH-T999 to your computer.

Step 6. Download Odin and Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 stock ROM and unzip both files, you should find two folders like shown below.

Download ODIN

Download Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 Stock ROM

Step 7. Double-click on odin3 v1.85.exe to launch ODIN program.  You should see a yellow highlighted box with a random number.  If you don’t, you don’t have drivers installed.  Simply download and install Samsung Kies.  After installing Kies, don’t run Kies but simply unplug your phone and plug it back it, you should see yellow highlighted box now.

Step 8. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING but click on “PDA” and choose the file “T999UVALEM_T999TMBALEM_T999UVALEM_HOME.tar.md5”.  Then hit “Start” to start the unrooting process.

Step 9. This process should take around 10-15 minutes.  Don’t use any other programs on your computer during this process as it can interfere.

Step 10. When it’s done, your phone should reboot and you should find your T-Mobile Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 completely back to stock ICS ROM with all of your settings and apps in tact.

Step 11. If for some reason you are getting a lot of FCs (probably if coming from custom ROM), bootloops, or you just want to reset your phone completely to return for warranty you can do a factory reset.  Otherwise you can stop at Step 10.

Hold down Volume Up, Center Home, and Power buttons together for about 10 seconds until your phone resets.

Step 12. When your phone resets (screen goes blank), let go of the Power button but keep holding down Volume Up and Center Home button together.

Step 13. Once in stock Android recovery, choose “wipe data/factory reset” and choose “yes”.  Then reboot.

Step 14. Once rebooted your phone should be completely back to stock ROM and also just like the day you got the phone.

Remember, you still have to backup all of your personal photos, videos, and other files in your internal storage/microSD card and erase them if you are going to return your phone for warranty.

Q: ODIN does not start at all.
A: Your Windows computer probably has some driver interference, the quickest solution is to try another computer.

Q: ODIN fails in the middle.
A: Make sure you are not connected to your computer via USB Hub.  You can reset your phone back into ODIN Download mode and try again.  If all else fails, TRY ANOTHER COMPUTER.

We only have to reset the counter if we plan on taking the phone back for warranty issues, correct?

  2. TsumeNoKo says:

I don’t plan to use this until there is an OTA update, but thanks very much for uploading. Will watch anyway.

  3. TsumeNoKo says:

Are you saying we can simply use Super User to unroot the T999? Thanks for this video, but if it’s that simple, then why not just do a video on that?

  4. TsumeNoKo says:

I wish I could unroot and still be able to keep the phone like I have it (all the apps and such). I don’t have a custom ROM, simply the root. Is it possible to unroot without losing all aquired the data? Just like we rooted without losing any data?

  6. Mike says:

Great work Max, I just spent a little time passing around your site and I’m definitely impressed. I’m curious though, do you think it is possible that Triangle Away will be compatible with the SGH-T999 anytime soon?

    • Max says:

Oh yeah, ChainFire is working on in, I think it might actually work already but if it’s not just wait another week and it should work.

If I’m running a custom kernel, will I need to flash a stock kernal before I do this? Or does the .tar file contain the kernel too? Thanks!

  9. kevin says:

Noob question, I know android phones cant get viruses but i think mine might have one probably not lol. but un-rooting my Gs3 will completely get it back like new, just like out of the box?

  12. Vinny says:

Where can I get the stock Android recovery? I have a complete stock unchanged rooted T-Mobile rom, I want to flash the stock recovery, run the triangle Away app and then un root thru the Super User app. Does this sound right Max?

  13. Vinny says:

    Thanks Max, worked great.
After getting the OTA update I flashed Team Winn recovery but titanium backup says i am not rooted. Do I need to root my phone again? Is there anything else that I am unaware of? Should I just reroot.?
If I have to reroot should i first flash the stock recovery first? Can I just run the root thru odin with the Team Winn recovery and I will be all set?
    Thanks for everything,

    • Max says:

Just flash this in any custom recovery to get root again:

Thanks so much for posting this. Saved my phone last night. I am rooted, running the latest CM 10 ROM. I wanted to try the new CM 10 Boot Animation, so I downloaded it from XDA.

Problem is-I am too much of a noob to know how to install a custom boot animation that isn’t part of a ROM. I got the black “screen of death”. Nothing. LED notifications worked and I could hear email notifications, but screen was completely black.

Thought I might have to buy a new phone until I saw your post. Booted into ODIN download-reflashed T-Mo Stock. Got hung up on bootload (stuck on animation screen), so I did a full wipe and all GOOD again!!

    Thanks for the help!

Hey Max, my friend had a question:
Will t mobile terminate his contract if they figure out that he rooted his phone? Will unrooting it make it go back to normal?

    • Max says:

No tmobile cannot figure it out nor is it legal for tmobile to do that. Yes, unrooting makes your phone completely back to factory, “unvoids” warranty.

  16. Sammie says:

    Hey Max

  17. CSharpner says:

OK, I just got a notification that my T-Mobile Galaxy S3 T989 has an update… I’m assuming it’s Jelly Bean! My phone is rooted and when I started the update, it failed. Am I supposed to unroot first?

Here’s an image of the error I got:

  18. Sammie says:

I tried rebooting by phone. That didn’t work. So, I just wiped the partition cache and the play store let me install apps. However, despite 4g data, it took a good 5 minutes to install a 20 MB app.

I then instaled gapps thinking it would install the rom over when i tried it next. It didnt. when i rebooted i was still rooted but when i went to the play store it didnt let me download any apps it just gave me no server retry message. i then tried to un root my phone with the above method but when i plugged into odin it gives me this message when i try to start the un rooting process

would this rom work for the SGH-T999V model (Videotron, Canada) ??

  24. Mike says:

I would also very much like to know if this would work for the SGH-T999V model from Videotron in Canada? The only issue I can see is that the stockrom you have provided is maybe not optimized for the T999V.

  29. Omar says:

I have t999uvalh2 installed and rooted. Can I unroot back to t999uvalem instead without messing anything up?

    • Max says:

No, if you are on newer software, do not unroot to older firmware if you want to keep your setting and apps. It will work fine though if you do a factory reset before unrooting.

  30. zak says:

If i do this will everything that was on the root go away and i reclaim all storage like when i got the s3

After I tried this, my phone won’t turn on.
After the booting animations, im stuck in the samsung logo screen.
    Please help me!

    • Max says:

Install CWM Recovery using this method here:

Then do factory reset in CWM Recovery.

You can also do factory reset in stock recovery but I tell u this method as this one won’t erase your internal storage.

    • Max says:

You probably didn’t do a factory reset before, anyways, here’s how to fix:

      Install CWM recovery:

Then reboot into CWM recovery and do a factory reset.

  39. Jason says:

Hey! I did backup my original rom, but sadly, I erased it by accident. CM10 mod is working fine, but I think I want to go back to my stock rom for now. I can follow this guide, but the link to the stock rom ( Download Galaxy S3 SGH-T999 Stock ROM ) doesn’t seem to be working. I trust MAX and don’t want to get a stock firmware from somewhere else because I don’t know if it will be the right one. Could anyone please direct me to where I can find a stock rom. I have a samsung galaxy s3 from Videontron in Montreal Canada. SGH-T999V.
    Thank you so much.

    • Jason says:

I think now I may have screwed myself. I can’t seem to find a stock rom for Videotron Galaxy S3 SGH-T999V anywhere. Is baseband version important? Mine is T999VVLLH2. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I rooted my phone with ICS and I did the TriangleAway to reset the counter. I did the update to Jelly bean through Kies and the phone was unrooted. I rooted again using the same method and all was fine. I am rooted again. Thanks

  43. Jason says:

Hey I downloaded the stock rom software from the website, but when I tried to install it from CWM Recovery, it said it couldn’t install it because the file was bad. Anyone know if the file is corrupted or where I can get another copy? I don’t want to unroot, I just want to put TouchWiz back because CM10 has been buggy. Thanks!

  44. j-cub says:

I was running my s3 rooted, but on stock firmware. I wanted to get the OTA update and instead of unrooting I just restored stock recovery, did a full wipe, and updated that way. Unfortunately, my phone does not give me a quick reply option, to reply to texts from the notification bar. Could this be a result of not doing a full unroot? Or am I missing a setting somewhere that would allow me to change this?

  45. Demiera says:

I successfully rooted my phone using your tips (first timer, so many thanks for that!)
Over the weekend, I dropped my phone and the digitizer broke. Now, the screen won’t work anymore.
My replacement unit will arrive tomorrow, but I have to send this one back, and I am terrified that they will know I rooted (even though the screen doesn’t work)
Is there any way to unroot without being able to see the screen prompts? Or, will they even be able to tell I rooted, given the screen stays black?
Any help you can give is greatly appreciated, and thank you for everything you do in helping us with our phones!

    • j-cub says:

If you have a new one on its way, what are you worried about? Technically if you are really careful and check and triple check that you are doing everything right, you can use this method without a digitizer, all you need are the home, volume, and power buttons. I think you’d need a working digitizer to do the triangle away app though.

      • Demiera says:

In order to get the new phone without having to pay full price for it, I had to send my old unit to the insurance company. I was concerned that they might try to weasel out of covering the phone if they could see it was rooted. But I’m coming to learn that there is a big difference between voiding warranty by rooting, and voiding insurance (which I guess, doesn’t apply to root?) Sent the whole thing back as is anyway, so there’s nothing more but to wait.
Thank you for the response and the tips, though. It took me 5 or 6 tries to root my phone the first time (my counter was WAY up there, another reason I was so worried), so I doubt I would have the tech finesse to blindly do ANYTHING with the phone 🙂

        • j-cub says:

Well, rooting your phone doesn’t affect the counter, only flashing custom roms will add to your binary count. So you probably would have been fine. Hope everything went without a hitch for you!

      • faizan says:

Because you sound like you know what you are doing, could I start the unroot process from cm 10.1 or do I have to find a way to get a stock galaxy s3 rom on my phone first?

        • j-cub says:

You can do it from cm-10.1, I actually just did that five minutes ago. The unroot process essentially is just an installation of the stock rom. Just make sure you clear your caches and do a factory reset while you are on cm-10.1. If you do all that and still get stuck at the samsung screen when it reboots after you install stock firmware (which is what happened to me), you can either reboot into stock recovery and perform another factory reset (which is what I did) or you can install an odin-flashable cwm recovery and then do a factory reset from there. Doing the former will wipe your internal memory, while the other will not.

  52. Joanne says:

Hi, I have been trying to use your method to unroot my samsung galaxy s3 Tmobile (T999).
However, when I download the firmware it goes to my downloads folder but the file name is; T-Mobile-SGH-T999-Stock-Recovery (not exactly the file like in your own photo on the instructions page) and it is automatically a winzip file. I’ve tried to extract this file but it turns into a file name called recovery. So, when I tried to use Odin to upload the PDA it does not show this file called recovery.

I’ve placed both Tmobile stock rom firmware onto my desktop to make it easier to navigate to.
Please, if you could answer as soon as possible. It would be great! I’ve decided to get CM10 Nightly because I thought it would be worth a try. Now, I am kind of regretting it. Last night, I’ve tried to get the play store but the app constantly crashes and I tried to follow other people’s instructions to fix it but that did not work. So, I’ve decided to just go back to the original settings of the phone.

Thank you for reading… Please respond soon!
    – Joanne.

        • j-cub says:

You can either go into recovery mode and do a factory reset, or you can flash cwm again and do a factory reset from there. The difference is that on stock recovery your internal memory will be wiped, whereas on cwm recovery it will not.

  57. Omar says:

I am assuming you have a T-Mobile S3 and are you using the correct firmware version that was on your device?
