If you are looking for the best AOSP experience without losing all of your Samsung features like multi-window and carrier-specific stuff like WiFi-calling, check out DanDroid ROM.

Based on latest firmware for the carrier you need (e.g. T-Mobile version is based on T-Mobile firmware), DanDroid ROM is an Android 4.1.2 TouchWiz ROM that gives you the least amount of bloatware while giving you as much AOSP as possible.

Inside you will find a TouchWiz launcher that has been modified to look more AOSP along with AOSP apps like the calendar, dialer, and more. (You also have option of flashing additional add-ons.)

Overall, this is a very stable ROM that will give you as much AOSP experience without actually running AOSP ROMs.  If you are looking for such a custom ROM, definitely give this one a try this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

Okay so I’ve been playing with this for a couple of hours now and initially I don’t know what was going on but my phone was lagging big time (like 10 seconds to close an app or 5 seconds before the back button worked) but after about 15 minutes or so it appears to be stable now.

It runs very smoothly and still has all my previous apps installed to my surprise. I thought that flashing it would essentially wipe my phone and put this fresh new ROM on it but that is not the case. I flashed it with CWM recovery and did nothing else but reboot the phone when it was done. Would all my previous apps have been removed if I had done a Factory Reset afterwards? I previously was running the stock ROM with root. I have tried other ROMs before but oddly enough was never satisfied with them because I always had some type of issue such as Mobile Data not working or some other crap so I always went back to my Rooted Stock ROM.

This seems to run much smoother than before and just feels better to me. I have not had one problem with it as of yet and I am trying to find something wrong with it but can’t . Everything works without having to tweak a damn thang. I am absolutely please with this! Can Anyone else tell me if their previous apps were still installed after flashing this ROM?

For AT&T version. I may have found 1 issue. Will this ROM allow/recognize LTE connections? I notice LTE is not displayed where I normally get LTE and download speeds are slower according to speed tests but still not that big a deal to me. Just making note of it.

It sounds like you did whats called a “dirty flash”.
That’s the only reason I can think as to why your previous apps were still there.
Really you are supposed to wipe cache, wipe dalvik, and do a full factory reset/wipe before flashing any roms.

However, if you were able to dirty flash and not have any issues then good for you!
Everytime I have tried, it’s given me issues and I have been forced to full wipe and lose everything.

The other reason I can think of, is google now makes it so when you sign into your account on a new device, you can restore your apps/contacts/emails, etc that you had on your last device–as long as the device was properly backed up to your google account…

      Hope this helps!

Side note: Is this rom still running good for you? I am considering flashing this one onto my phone, the rom i am currently running is horrible on battery life, I’ve got to charge twice a day, which is unacceptable. How’s the battery life on this one?

      • Ed says:

I believe that you are right on with the dirty flash theory. It ran very well and I would say that battery life was not too bad.  Definitely a bit worse than the rooted stock rom I was on for the longest time.  I flashed a different rom and hated it so I flashed it back to stock via odin and  ran that for a week then reflashed Dandriod 3.9 (I actually wiped completely and factory reset this time and all my previous apps were gone) then to Dandriod 4.41 which I am currently running. I am absolutely pleased and plan on running this until the next version comes out. Again battery is not bad but seems to be a bit worse than stock. I pretty much charge it off and on through out the day but I would imagine it would make it almost all day.

do we need to flash gaaps?….if so what version

    • xunholyx says:

I haven’t tried this ROM yet, but you can always just flash it, reboot, then see if you have any google apps. If not, I would suggest the 20130301 version since this isn’t a 4.3 ROM.

      • Lubby Runz-It says:

Do NOT flash gapps. Market will force close.

          • Max says:

Try formatting /system and reinstall rom.

            • Christian says:

I just did a factory reset from the ROM and it works great! But I want to know how can I get back the S Memo app, because when I search it in the play store it says that muy device its not compatible…. Also I want to know which ROM do you think its the best for T-mobile version

              • Lubby Runz-It says:

Download the 4shared app from your device. Make an account. Search any app u want. (For example, you would search: S Memo.apk) Download it, and install. The end!

  11. cody bowden says:

First of all thank you to Max for introducing this ROM to us. I love the AOSP theme of this ROM and the touchwiz features. I had to toggle my data off then on again to get it to work but everything else was smooth after that. GPS, DATA, MMS, SMS, NFC, BLUETOOTH, EMAIL, and WIFI all working out of the box. I added the hacked YouTube apk since ROM does not come YouTube standard app. Going to add photoshere and try and add note2 keyboard and there you go, perfect ROM for me. Also battery life seems to be great as well.

  12. Ken says:

After downloading this rom i was very pleased but i have this tiny issues which others arent seem to having on the same exact phone and rom version. no videos from my gallery will play whether from the sd card or just taken with the phone. anybody else had this problem?

  14. Ed says:

Where or how do you get the call recording feature you speak of in the video Max? Is it an apk or do I have to flash a zip file?

  15. Sean Weber says:

One of the best and easiest ROM’s to use and way better than the stock ROM.Only flaw is I can’t use media share through DLNA near by devices, other than that, AWESOME
Thank you for all you do. Makes phones seem like a new one without the price of a new one !!!!!!!

  16. Danny Magallanez says:

Hey guys, I did a full factory reset, wiped the cache, the dalvik cache, everything you can imagine, and when I’m listening to music on Google Play or YouTube, I’m getting very choppy playback. Is there any way to fix this? I don’t wanna reinstall the ROM if its just going to keep happening.

  17. Ken says:

I flashed this ROM yesterday and everything seems to be working fine except I do not have any of the wallpapers to change to either for the home page or the lock screen. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks.

  18. Roberto says:

I found this one, some of you should be interest on it. It works on mine (t-mobile s3)

If you have issues locking to GPS, Don’t worry to much, this is a common problem when flashing from AOSP to touchwiz or one touchwiz base to another, there is quite a easy fix

1)Enter service mode by typing this code into the dial pad *#197328640#
    Wait 1 min
    hold power and select reboot
    check GPS upon boot.

    I didnt’ try this:

Odin to stock (use mobile to preserve root) – MAKE SURE YOU USE 4.1.1 JELLYBEAN or higher as those bootloaders are very important should you choose to flash AOSP
    factory reset
root (if you didn’t use mobile)
    flash rom and check GPS

    • Ted says:

That seems to work. Thanks Roberto.

By the way, I’ve been using Cyanogenmod but need wifi calling. This is why I flash Dandroid. However, I’m open to suggestions if you can recommend a better Touchwiz based rom with wifi calling?

  19. Richard luciano says:

I can’t get my WiFi to turn on for anything..any idea why the WiFi does not work..
